Delta Programme
The Netherlands: safe and liveable
To keep the Netherlands safe and liveable for future generations and to optimise the use of the opportunities offered by water, significant efforts are being expended on the Delta Programme.
The Delta Programme consists of a series of concrete projects. These projects are intended to ensure that our country is protected against flooding and in addition, that the supply of freshwater is secure. The Delta Act constitutes the legal foundation for the programme. This Act will be submitted to the Lower House on February 1, 2010.
The Delta Act and the Delta Programme arose from the recommendations entitled “Working with Water Together" by the Delta Commission and the National Water Plan.
The integrated structure of the Delta Programme means that in addition to the government (with the Ministries of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment (VROM), Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV) and VenW as the initiating ministries) other authorities like the provinces, municipalities and water boards are also involved in the programme. Knowledge institutes and the business community are also playing an important role in the implementation of the Delta Programme.
