International water management
Trans-border cooperation
If a large cargo of hazardous substances winds up in the Rhine river in Germany, we experience the consequences of this in the Netherlands. This demonstrates how the responsibility for clean water does not stop at the border. The Netherlands is working together with other countries to safeguard water quality in the major rivers, the North Sea and the Wadden Sea. This cooperation is not only limited to neighbouring countries and EU Member States. The Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management (V&W) also wants to share the expertise it has accumulated on water management and flood protection with other countries. This occurs in part through the Partners for Water programme, in which other ministries, agencies and companies also cooperate.
